Half bridge mode

Article ID: 136

Product: P-660R-D1
Type: ZyXEL UK
Firmware:

Problem:

Do ZyXEL routers support a mode of operation where the single public IP address is pushed onto a device such as a separate firewall on the LAN?

Solution:

This mode of operation is referred to as half bridge mode and is only supported on the P-660R-D1 router. In this mode the PPP session is terminated on the router but the IP address is pushed back onto the device on the LAN. DHCP is used to issue the IP address to the device on the LAN. The router also uses this public IP address for the default gateway when it offers the DHCP settings.

It applies to both PPPoA and PPPoE modes. PPPoA is commonly used in the UK.

To set up this mode of operation

1) Configure the router in a standard PPPoA setup so that it works to a PC connected on the LAN
2) Turn off NAT
3) Telnet into the router and at the command line enable half bridge mode: "poe bridge switch on"
4) Set the DHCP lease time to a short period, eg 120 seconds: "ip dhcp enif0 server lease 120"

Note that no ZyXEL routers support PPPoA to PPPoE bridging where the router converts a PPPoE connection on the LAN to a PPPoA connection on the WAN.
